Turning thoughts digital

Synchron has achieved a groundbreaking integration of its brain-computer interface (BCI) technology with Apple devices, notably the Vision Pro headset. This advancement enables individuals with severe motor impairments to control digital devices using only their thoughts. A notable demonstration involved Mark, a 64-year-old ALS patient, who successfully used his thoughts to navigate the Vision Pro interface, playing games, watching videos, and sending messages—tasks previously inaccessible to him due to loss of hand mobility. The core of this innovation is Synchron’s Stentrode device, a minimally invasive implant placed via the jugular vein to detect motor intent signals from the brain’s motor cortex. These signals are then wirelessly transmitted to Apple devices, facilitating hands-free and voice-free interaction. Apple’s adoption of the BCI Human Interface Device protocol further supports this integration, recognizing neural interfaces as native input methods. This collaboration between Synchron and Apple signifies a significant leap in assistive technology, offering enhanced accessibility and autonomy to individuals with paralysis.
